When a volcano erupts, hot lava, melted rocks and deadly smoke comes out.


What is a volcano?
A volcano is a mountain where lava comes out from something called the magma chamber and goes up the vent. A vent is a tube that leads the lava to the top of the volcano so it can get out.


Volcano facts
There are about 1500 active volcanoes in the world that have erupted in the past 10,000 years. More than 80% of the earth has come from volcanoes. Volcanoes can cause tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and rockfalls.

The two volcanoes in Italy
The two volcanoes in Italy are Mount Etna and Mount Vesuvius. Mount Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii. Mount Vesuvius has erupted more than 50 times! Mount Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii's sister city Herculaneum.

A volcano is formed by one plate going under the other.

What is the tallest volcano in the world?

The tallest volcano is called Mauna Kea and it is in Hawaii. It is the world's tallest mountain and the world's tallest volcano. It's about 20,000 feet under the Pacific ocean.
